ABOUT THE OWNER
Georgia Eccles Schoeman was born in Cambridge UK, a varied school career from Boarding School in Scotland to studying A levels at St Johns College Johannesburg. Whilst living in London and studying history of Art GCSE level, a great love flourished for the arts which continued to University. Georgia studied Ba Hons in History of Art at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK.
After finishing her degree Georgia helped her mother Patricia Eccles open the first Indian Summer on Fulham Rd, London which still exists and is striving under different ownership. Georgia was contemplating a partnership with her mother but a serious relationship brought her to Cape town in March 2002. After a few weeks she started her own business, exporting South African Art to London, a chance to be in both towns! There she attended art fairs and organised exhibitions and worked with a number of galleries and collectors.
After a few years the strain of constant traveling motivated her to start a business in Cape Town and thought of nothing better than an Indian Summer South Africa which opened in November 2004 – a lifestyle store selling art and home wares alongside clothing, accessories and Jewellery. This was at 4 Cavendish Close, Claremont, a beautiful little cottage and perfect for her first own full time shop!
After a year and half of good trading she was looking to expand the shop and found the present space in Franschhoek which offered us two beautiful shops in the heart of Franschhoek where we could further our clothing lines and imports, as well as add a men’s collection and also have a gallery situated on a mezzanine level.
In August 2006 Indian Summer, Peacock Blue and The Peacock Gallery opened.
Indian Summer went from strength to strength always on the lookout for unique fresh fashions from both Europe and the East. The growth of retail clothing business along with family commitments lead to art being put on the back burner. I still kept in contact with a number of artists and galleries and when two artists were hankering to work with me again and the perfect space in Franschhoek became available, it all seemed to be the right time. Art in the Yard opened December 2012
